Hong Kong Park

Hong Kong Park is situated on a hillside site that was formerly Victoria Barracks. The park’s elevation and unique location within Central provides exceptional views of modern skyscrapers situated immediately adjacent to the lush landscape of the park itself against a backdrop of the blue of Victoria Harbour. With an area of 8.16 hectares, the park includes a cluster of historic buildings from the former garrison that have been conserved. Surrounded by the verdant landscape, there is a wide range of attractions including the aviary, a conservatory and many other recreational facilities.

Water spills over rocky ledges, topples into ponds and splits into streams that smoothly flow through the park, providing attractive features at various different levels. Visitors are offered many opportunities to experience the different water features from various view points and positions.
The meandering walk through the Humid House of Forsgate Conservatory allows visitors to experience tropical forest planting from different parts of the world. The planting and pathway design sequentially opens and conceals views and spaces as one moves through the garden. Tree ferns create an overhead canopy creating a sense of green enclosure.
A small stream and waterfall in the Forsgate Conservatory Humid House is an attractive feature. Surrounded by rich vegetation, water flows through rocks and stones and creates a cooling effect whilst the sound of the falling water enhances the atmosphere of the garden.
Cacti, succulents and plants from arid areas around the world are displayed in the Dry Plant House of the Forsgate Conservatory, including this Golden Barrel Cactus (<i>Echinocactus grusonii</i>).
various areas of the park were constructed at different times and in different design styles, provide a very interesting mix of plant species. The Tai Chi Garden, for example, features a specimen <i>Taxodium distichum</i> (Bald Cypress) and <i>Liquidambar styraciflua</i> (Sweetgum). Both species provide colourful foliage displays during winter.
At various positions throughout the park views of the city provides glimpses of the built heritage of Hong Kong. The 100-year-old former Legco Building (Old Supreme Court Building) and the Lion Rock Hill in Kowloon can be seen between the modern skyscrapers of the Bank of China and ICBC Tower framed by the different species of trees within the Park.
The Edward Youde Aviary is the biggest aviary of its type in Hong Kong. A suspended stainless steel net covers a site of several hectares avoiding the use of columns. Located in a natural valley many of the original trees were retained and maintained within the netted canopy. The natural topography of the site, creating a variety of microclimatic conditions, allows for a large mix of plant species and vegetation associations that, in turn, creates a variety of bird habitats.
A large heart-shaped flowerbed is placed in the landscaped area outside the Marriage Registry of Hong Kong Park for photo taking by the newlyweds and their relatives.
The Tai Chi Garden is a contemporary Chinese themed garden providing a series of quiet, passive, contemplative spaces defined and enclosed by a colonnade. Tall canopy trees surrounding the area screen views of nearby buildings. Features such as <i>Liquidambar styraciflua</i> (Sweetgum) provide a variety of attractive seasonal foliage displays.
