Gist of the Eleventh Meeting held on 30 September 2013
- Presentation on proposals to save OVT LCSD YTM/97
- Members reiterated that more information as previously requested including the composition of the chemicals, detailed methodology, method of monitoring and assessing the effectiveness of the treatment, risk assessment and track records would be required. So far the three proponents have not provided sufficient information.
- Members had reservation to adopt any proposal without knowing the toxicity of the chemicals and other details, and concluded that further treatment of OVT LCSD YTM/97 was not recommendable as the side effects of the chemicals were unknown.
- Progress of the consultancy study on "Evaluation of Trichoderma species as a biological control agent against Phellinus noxius infected trees in Hong Kong"
- The study aimed to understand and evaluate the antagonistic effect of locally isolated Trichoderma strains as a biological control agent against local strains of Phellinus noxius on different tree hosts. Field trial experiments would be conducted later this year on young trees artificially inoculated with Phellinus noxius. Relevant parameters would be monitored for the field trials.
- Actual field trial of applying Trichoderma on a mature tree with advanced stage of Brown Root Rot infection was not advisable.
- OVT LCSD SSP/16 at Wistaria Road
- The growth of OVT LCSD SSP/16 affected some structures in the adjacent lot. Pruning of the tree would be arranged to reduce the loading weight. The monitoring of the structural condition of the tree would continue.
- Phoenix canariensis at Magic Road, Penny Bay
- To tackle the infestation of Brontispa longissima (coconut leaf beetle), LCSD has adopted an integrated pest management plan and increased both the frequency and dosage of the application of insecticides to the palms. The condition of the palms has been improving.
- Members considered the need to reduce the amount of water and change the methods of irrigation, and to remove the plantings around the base of the palms and the ferns growing on the leaf scars. LCSD would set up baiting systems and work with the adjacent theme park in developing a coordinated and comprehensive pest control programme against the spread of the pest problems to other palms in the area.
