Gist of the Seventh Meeting held on 29 November 2012
- Report on Progress of Tree Management Office's Research
- Members were briefed of the progress of the three ongoing researches, namely 'Occurrence and Distribution of Common Wood Decay Fungi on Trees of Hong Kong', 'Wood Strength Assessment for Common Tree Species in Hong Kong', and 'Comprehensive Street Tree Management Plan for Hong Kong'. On the wood strength study, members noted that the scope of the study was only based on a range of tree species and the woods collected from different parts of a tree were heterogeneous. The findings would be used as reference and for further researches.
- Members in general considered the studies as useful since they covered areas on tree management that were not conducted by other researches in Hong Kong before.
- Analysis of Tree Failure Reports
- The TMO had also conducted some empirical studies on the tree failure data gathered from the departments with a view to supplementing other studies.
- There were a total of 1,099 cases reported as at 5 November 2012. Members considered that the data collected required in depth analysis in order to identify the factors attributing to tree failures.
- Members also noted that with the implementation of the Tree Management Information System (TMIS), analysis of multi-variable factors as suggested by members could be carried out.
- To facilitate the collection of basic information of tree failure during the attack of typhoons, a data input form had already been devised for use.
- Report on Removal of OVT LCSD N/26
- Members were briefed of the urgent removal of OVT LCSD N/26, Ficus microcarpa, at Jockey Club Road on 22 September 2012. Members recognized the need for the prompt action to reduce the risk.
- Enrichment of Old and Valuable Trees (OVT) in the OVT Register
- Members were informed of the measures on enriching the OVT Register. Members would also be invited to offer advice on the list of potentially registrable OVTs.
- Members suggested that private sectors should be encouraged to develop their own register of special trees on private land.
- The Tree Support System for LCSD YTM/2
- While the feasibility study of erecting the prop was underway, pruning works would be done promptly to abate the risk to the public. Further advice from EPTM would be sought while comments were being sought from the utility companies and the District Council for the detailed design.
